Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary.

Day 983 of my captivity.
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again throw up on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell. He is safe for now!

Luke's Best Friend

Lukes Best Friend

As I've mentioned before, our cat is Luke's best friend. They spend the day together.

She adores him, and vice versa.

Here she is, keeping an eye on things from the balcony.

This was a Tough Day

This was a Tough Day

We had a follow up visit today with the Veternary Surgeon that originally repaired Luke's damaged ACL, and the news was not what we wanted to hear. Our surgeon advised that the earlier procedure had failed and Luke must have additional surgery.

I learned today that the procedure to repair a torn ACL involves resecuring the tendon ends with a filament type line that is double clamped to hold it tight. The filament resembles the kind of high test line used in deep sea fishing. It sounds primitive, but this is how it's done.

The photo above was taken after Luke's first surgery. According to our Vet, the upcoming procedure won't be as invasive and will not require as long of an incision.

I think about the little aches and pains I complain about daily, and then I realize the discomfort this poor animal has endured. Inspite of this, he wags that tail and is always ready to play.

I need to keep this in mind next time I catch myself whining about something.

Can Dogs Smile?

Can Dogs Smile?

Sure they can. Dogs show happiness through a number of ways. A wagging tail. Playful energy. An open mouth and bright eyes. These are just a few of the ways to know you have a happy animal.

Ever had a Prayer Answered?

If you've read any of this blog, you can't help but realize how much this dog means to me. Luke came into my life from two good friends when he was about 7 years old. I instantly felt a bond with this animal that words can't describe. And while I've loved every animal that God has blessed me with, my old "Lukey Boy" is truly something special.

As Luke and I get older and our hair gets whiter, I can't help but think about how to make the most of the remaining years we have together. None of us know just how long we'll be on earth, but it's likely that Luke will get to heaven before I do. Sometimes when it's just the two of us, I'll tell him "Luke, just promise me you'll live one day longer than I do."

I've often wondered about Luke's younger years, and wished I could have known him as a puppy.

I guess God heard my thoughts.

Out of the blue, Luke's former owner came to see me recently and asked me if I'd like to have several old VHS tapes that he'd saved from 1997 when Luke was 1 year old. These tapes were taken of Luke when he was a puppy, and you can literally see him learning, growing and getting bigger as you watch each tape. Lukes loving characteristics and his "desire to please" are clearly evident in these decade old tapes.

For me, watching these tapes is like being able to step back in time.

It's like having my prayers answered.

Goin' for a ride

Time for a Ride

Me and my main man have been falling behind on our riding time. It's harder for Luke to get in and out of my SUV, and harder for me to pick him up and lift him in. Once he's in though, riding around with the window down and his head out the window is one of his favorite activities. He especially gets excited when people in other cars talk and wave to him, and tell him how beautiful he is.

Animal Shelter

God Bless the good people that volunteer their time to the Animal Shelter here in my area. They spend their days at the entrance to our local mall, with several dogs that need a home. The dogs are kept in individual cages and they look so pitiful. They are starved for attention and human contact.

I'm sure that there are legitimate cases where emergencies arise in which people can no longer keep their pet. On the other hand, I'm told that there are many cases where people simply "turn in" their dogs to the animal shelter, because they can't be inconvenienced to care for them any longer.

That's hard to imagine.

Interesting Perspective

Interesting Quote:

If a dog doesn't put you first where are you both? In what relation?

A dog needs God. It lives by your glances, your wishes. It even shares your humor.

This happens about the fifth year. If it doesn't happen you are only keeping an animal.

I Slept in Today

I slept in this morning.

It was raining. The blinds were down. The room was cool, dark and quiet. Ideal conditions for being lazy.

As I drifted out of my dream state, I became aware that someone else was in the bedroom.

I rolled over and adjusted my pillow, and I heard Luke's collar jingle as he raised his head to see over the edge of the bed.

He'd been laying there all night waiting patiently for me to wake up, and standing guard while I slept.

Man's best friend.

My best friend.

Lukeday

Lukeday

I'm having a cup of hot coffee now and my pal is laying beside me here. Words can't describe what a blessing this animal is.

Because of my work schedule, I work a lot of weekends, so when possible I try to take time off on Wednesdays. Or as we call it, Lukeday.

We're waiting to see what the weather holds, but regardless of whether or not it rains, we'll have fun. We'll go for a walk, chase the tennis ball, have some snacks, and play with some stuffed toys. Sometime during the day, I'll give my buddy a good rub down and brushing. I'll make sure he also gets some time to sleep, because us old men need our naps.

Fall is here and winter is right around the corner, so we have to make the best of time outside.

"Someone" is snoring now.

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them.

A Day at the Lake

A Day at the Lake
We spent the afternoon at Trout Lake today. Trout Lake is just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, and is ideal for hiking and horseback riding.
Our vet told us that swimming was one of the best ways to help Luke recover from his surgery. We were careful not to over do it. We played fetch the tennis ball, and let Luke get some time in the water. He's clearly not at all afraid of the water, perhaps as a result of his breeding and from his younger years.
One thing I've noticed. It's hard for someone to walk by without petting a Golden. They just give off this vibe that says "please pet me and love on me!"
It was a glorious day that I will not soon forget. Praise God for giving us dogs as companions.

We Lost a Member of Our Family Yesterday

We lost a family member.

My mother's dog Chauncey, died yesterday. He died during the night beside her bed, guarding her as she slept, like he had every night for 12 years.

The very same day, the little female dog above was abandoned to the animal shelter by an elderly lady, who could no longer care for her due to illness. We learned of this sweet little puppy and have adopted it. She has already taken to my mother, and is helping mend her broken heart.

We'll miss Chauncey, and nothing can replace his place in my mother's life. Somehow I think Chauncey would be happy that my mother has someone protecting her each night.

Goldens

My buddy has spent most of the day laying right here with me. We just finished taking a nap together on the floor. What a loving animal.

The people I've met who've owned Golden Retrievers wouldn't consider owning anything else. So like the saying goes, "If it's not a Golden, it's just a dog".

R&R

Rest and Relaxation

Our vet has prescribed plenty of R&R, and we're seeing to it that Luke is following doctor's orders.

Good Report

Luke got a good report today. His scar is healing well and our vet says everything looks good.

I've had him napping beside me since I got home from work. He's a good boy.

Sleeping in on Sunday

My buddy is sleeping in this beautiful Sunday morning. He couldn't get comfortable and had a restless night. He's lying here right beside me in a deep sleep.
I know that Luke is feeling better, because that tail of his was wagging a little last night ... and that made me feel better.

The Patient is Resting Comfortably.

Luke had his surgery today, and is back home now. The picture to the left shows the shaved area and scar on his left leg. He's been through quite an ordeal today, and is resting in the family room now.

His scar is about 10 inches long, with metal staples every 1/2 inch. I can't imagine how that feels. Poor guy.

I'm going to sleep in the family room with him tonight in case he needs something. He's got a 3 month recovery ahead of him.

Trust Your Instincts

As I mentioned in my last post, something just didn't seem right to me about Luke's first diagnosis, so we took Luke back to our vet and asked that he be x-ray'd. I'm glad we insisted on this.
The x-rays revealed that the problem was not arthiritis as the vet initially thought, but instead Luke is suffering from a detached ACL ligament in his hind leg. I have Luke scheduled for corrective surgery on Friday, June 20th.
Always trust your instincts in regard to your pet. You know your pet better than anyone.

Trip to the Vet

Trip to the Doctor
I turned 50 years old this year. Luke turned 11. Like me, I've noticed that Luke is moving slower, hobbling a bit and finding it harder to stand up.

We took Luke to the vet this week, and our doctor informed us that among other things, he believes that Luke is suffering from arthritis in his back leg and hip region. He's prescribed a pain killer to help him move about. It seems to help a little, but I'm not convinced that it provides him enough relief. We may be back for further testing.

Wag More, Bark Less

Wag More, Bark Less.
Wouldn't the world be a better place if humans would learn to take a little advice from dogs?

Man of the House

When you're a male dog in a house of mostly females (including the cat), you get spoiled. You get all the attention, hugs, kisses, petting, walks, pampering, treats, toys, massages and playtime, you can handle.

Sometimes Luke just collapses on the floor with a grunt when he's exhausted. It's not easy being the Man of the House around all these women.

He's a Biter.

He's a biter... terrifyingly viscous actually if you happen to be a tennis ball or a stuffed toy animal.
(Well, actually, he's more of a "chewer".)

Oof! Oof!! Oof!!! (translation: "He's Home! He's Home!" )

I'd just love to know what all that barking means when I pull into the driveway and Luke sees me. Barking! tail wagging, running to the garage door to meet me ... I like to think that all that ruckus means he's glad I'm home. He should be! No matter how long a day I've had, I know I'm sure glad to see him!

I often wonder...

Luke was given to our family when he was full grown, so we never experienced his younger years. I often find myself wondering what Luke must have been like as a puppy.
Luke was born California, and I was told that he "grew up" in Baton Rouge, LA at a home near a lake. He doesn't seem at all afraid of the water, and I remember the first time we went for a walk near a river. He waded right in up to his chest, and stood there with the water rushing under him. I recall being surprised at how comfortable he was in the water.
Occasionally, I get a glimpse at the "kid" in him ... like when we're chasing each other outside, or when he's chewing on a toy. When I reflect on my life over the last decade, I think about what age he would have been, and what he might have been experiencing. I wonder if he still has memories of his former life.
I'd give anything to have had Luke since he was a puppy. Maybe the fact that Luke came into my life late, is the reason I cherish the time we have together.
Sometimes when we're alone, I pull him up close to me and ask him to promise that he'll live just one day longer than I do.

We're Jammin'

We're Jammin'!

Time to get the rag top out and take Luke for a ride with his ears flapping in the wind. It doesn't get any better than riding around on a sunny summer day with the top down, listening to tunes, and running errands with Luke. Our typical day together includes:

  • Heading off to Walmart to pickup a bag of chicken jerky treats,
  • A walk around the hood, to visit Luke's canine homeys,
  • Working on a project in the garage listening to some tunes,
  • A stop by the bank drive-thru to make a deposit and get a doggy bone,
  • A fast food lunch for some chicken nuggets (Luke's favorite),
  • A stop by the car wash for some tail waggin' and to meet some new friends.

Simple pleasure are the best....just ask Luke.

Best Friends

I have to believe that animals can sense the level of aggression in other animals. Our cat, who is cautious about everything , is completely at ease around Luke and he adores her.

She plays with him. She rubs against him. She sleeps beside him. If he goes outside, she follows him.

Our cat will step in front of Luke while he's eating, and eat from his bowl. He just steps back and waits patiently until she's finished eating.

I've always heard that you should get between a dog and his food. I guess our cat has never heard that before.

Havin' a Ball!

Havin' a Ball!

Wednesdays are our day to have a ball. We only have a few responsibilities on Wednesdays (take out the trash, get the mail, run an errand or two.)

Well today we just laid around. It rained hard most of the day, so we practiced being lazy. We slept late, hung out, watched some TV and just chilled. Then we both had some left over pizza for lunch.

About 2 pm, we rode over to Wal-Mart because they have the best price on real meat chicken jerky. Chicken jerky is good for a dogs teeth and they make for good chewing fun. Luke loves them and we practice our tricks so he can get rewarded for doing them correctly. This dog lives to please his master, so he always responds promptly to my voice and hand commands, and does his tricks just perfectly.
Spring is nearing, and once this bad weather deminishes a little, we'll be taking long walks again. We took a nice walk last week and Luke nearly gave me a heart attack! Evidentally, he got distracted by some other dogs and we got seperated on our mountain trail. It took me 30 minutes to locate him.
This is a dog that never runs off, in fact he never leaves your sight. So when I found him, I had to really scold him by hugging and kissing him, telling him what a Good Boy he is, and then giving him some of his favorite treats. That should teach him never to do that again!

I'm not sure who, if anyone, reads this Blog but if anyone does, the one thing you should know is that if you ever want to experience true love, add tremendously to your quality of life, reduce your stress level, and have a loyal friend that will never forsake you - then get yourself a Golden Retriever.

A Golden is closer to an Angel, than they are a dog.

Happy Birthday Old Man

Happy Birthday Old Man!

* I've fallen down on my blog posting responsibilites for the last several months. My apologies to anyone following this blog.

We celebrated a birthday in our family earlier this month. My Lukey Boy turned 11 years old on March 8th. My daughters threw a party for Luke complete with party favors, streamers, presents, people food and doggy treats like cheese squares and chicken jerky. He was thrilled to be the center of our attention, and we were thrilled to be at his birthday celebration.

The photo above was not taken at the party, but was taken of Luke as he chewed away on one of his play toys (a toy squirrel, I think). He got plenty of toys at his party. His toy basket is overflowing. He loves to sling his furry critters from side to side, pounce on them, and chase after them when they're thrown. He's a Retriever, so he eventually brings them back to you. He's tough on toys, but wouldn't hurt a fly in real life. What a gentle loving giant he is.
